Terms & privacy
Levana — the Kiddush Levana moon finder at kiddushlevuna.com, operated by Turn Byte LLC, a Delaware limited liability company (“we”, “us”).
Last updated 4 September 2026.
Using the site means accepting what follows. It is short on purpose: Levana is free, it has no accounts, and it asks nothing of you.
1. What Levana is — and is not
Levana shows where the moon is, when the viewing window falls, whether buildings or terrain are likely to block your view, and what the sky is forecast to do. It also includes the text of the seder as a convenience for standing outside.
Levana is not a halachic authority. The times it shows are astronomical calculations, not paskened zmanim. The molad it gives is the astronomical new moon, which can differ from the announced halachic molad. The nusach included is Nusach Ashkenaz, and wording and order vary between siddurim and nuschaot.
Confirm zmanim with your luach, daven from your own siddur, and ask your rav. Do not rely on this site to decide a halachic question.
2. No warranty
The site is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the site will be uninterrupted, error-free, or available at any given moment.
Positions and times are computed with standard low-precision astronomical formulas — accurate to a few minutes, which is ample for finding the moon and is not intended for any purpose requiring more. Building heights come from OpenStreetMap and are frequently missing, estimated, or out of date. Weather is a forecast. Your phone's GPS and compass have errors of their own.
3. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Turn Byte LLC will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss arising out of your use of, or inability to use, the site — including any missed opportunity to say Kiddush Levana, any reliance on a time or direction shown, and anything that happens to you while walking outdoors looking at your phone. Our total liability for any claim relating to the site will not exceed twenty-five United States dollars (US$25).
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, in which case the limitations above apply to the fullest extent permitted.
4. Be sensible outside
Levana may suggest walking to a spot with a clear view. It knows about buildings; it does not know about traffic, kerbs, private property, or who else is on the street. Watch where you are going and use your own judgement.
5. Privacy — what we hold
There are no accounts, no tracking pixels, no advertising and no analytics. We do not run a server that receives your data, and we do not sell or share anything, because we do not have anything to sell or share.
- On your device only. Your location, saved home, name, language, minhag, chosen basemap and whether you have marked this month as said are stored in your browser's local storage. They never leave the device, and Settings → “Clear saved data” removes them.
- Your location. Read from your browser only after you allow it, used to compute what is on screen, and not transmitted to us.
- A rough starting point. Before you answer the location prompt — and if you decline it — the site places you approximately, to about the nearest city, from the network route your request already takes through Cloudflare. No extra lookup is made, no third party is involved, and no IP address is stored or logged for it. A real fix, a searched address or a tap on the map replaces it at once.
- The contact form. What you type is sent to us as an email and kept only in that mailbox, so that we can reply. Nothing is stored in a database.
6. Third-party services
Your browser fetches data directly from these services, which means they receive your IP address and the coordinates being looked up. Their own privacy policies govern that, not ours:
- OpenStreetMap — map tiles, and building footprints via Overpass API
- OpenTopoMap — terrain tiles
- Nominatim — place search and reverse geocoding
- Open-Meteo — the sky forecast
- unpkg — the Leaflet mapping library
- Cloudflare — hosting, the approximate starting location described above, and delivery of the contact form's message
Map data is © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License.
7. Cookies
Levana sets no cookies. Local storage, described above, stays on your device and is not sent to any server.
8. Using the site
Levana is free to use for its intended purpose. Please do not attempt to disrupt it, to overload the third-party services it depends on, or to use the contact form to send unsolicited or abusive mail. The site's own code, design and text are © Turn Byte LLC; the liturgy is not ours and is not claimed.
9. Changes
We may update these terms. The date at the top says when they last changed, and continuing to use the site after a change means accepting the revised terms.
10. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. The state and federal courts located in Delaware will have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them.
